Neck Pain

Neck pain, whether associated with arm pain, is common. The pain may come from the muscles, joints, discs or nerves. Other causes such as tumor, infection or trauma must also be considered. Risk factors other than aging includes occupations that require prolonged neck bending such as telephone and computer work. Initial work ups may include X-rays, labs and sometimes electrical nerve testing. Once the more serious causes are ruled out, in general, for degenerative conditions, one begins with neck stretching exercises and adaptive changes such as work location adjustment to avoid any ongoing causative factor. Physical therapy, interventional procedures and medications are of additional benefit depending on each patient’s situation.
